You can render the application server-side, so all the data has been pre-fetched before loading the web app in the browser. Afterward, you can write a simple REST API without setting up a Node.js server.

Use fetch API

Let’s do it in steps to make things simpler.

→ STEP #1

We need an API that we can call to learn how to use the fetch API in Next.js. For this, we will use RapidAPI Hub, which provides over 35,000+ APIs.

We will use the Famous Quotes API from RapidAPI Hub, so please go ahead and subscribe to it.

→ STEP #2

Now we need to set up a Next.js application. The simplest way to do it is by running the following command in your terminal:

The command will create a Next.js project called next-app. If you want to change the name, you can just replace next-app with what you want.

Now open this directory in your preferred code editor. Afterward, run the application running the following command in your project terminal:

The fetch API is asynchronous, so we need to await it. It is a function that takes the API endpoint as its first parameter. The second parameter of the fetch API is an object that contains data like HTTP method, request headers, request body, etc.

We have made a GET request in the above code snippet. If you want to make a POST request, you can just replace GET with POST. Here is a sample code snippet of how you can make a POST request using fetch API in Next.js.
